Advances in Biomedical Engineering is designed to present work of significance ranging from research to clinical and technological applications. The topics which are treated in this volume and other topics that will form the subsequent volumes of the series are selected on the basis of their relevance to more than one discipline and will have arisen in general as a result of inter- or multi-disciplinary effort.
This book comprises four chapters, with the first focusing on the biomedical applications of ultrasound. It tackles such topics as modes of action of ultrasound on living cells and tissues, changes in cell and tissue due to ultrasound, and therapeutic applications of high-intensity ultrasound. The following chapters then focus on separation of neuronal activity by waveform analysis; biomechanical characteristics of bone; and structural and mechanical aspects of connective tissue.
This book will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of biological engineering, physiology, and computer science.

Braiding is the process of interlacing three or more threads or yarns in a diagonal direction to the product axis in order to obtain thicker, wider or stronger textiles or, in the case of overbraiding, in order to cover a profile. Braids are becoming the reinforcement of choice in composite manufacturing, and have found a range of technical applications in fields including medicine, candles, transport and aerospace. Building on the information provided in Prof. Kyosev’s previous book, Braiding Technology for Textiles, this important title covers advanced technologies and new developments for the manufacture, applications and modelling of braided products.

Part One covers the braiding of three-dimensional profiles, and includes a detailed overview of three-dimensional braiding technologies as well as chapters devoted to specific kinds of 3D braiding. Part Two addresses specialist braiding techniques and applications, and includes chapters reviewing the use of braids for medical textiles and candles. Part Three focuses on braiding techniques for ropes and Part Four reviews braiding for composites. The final part of the book considers modelling and simulation, and covers topics including overbraiding simulation, Finite Element Method (FEM) modelling and geometrical modelling.

This book provides in a single and unified volume a clear and thorough presentation of the recent advances in continuum damage mechanics for metals and metal matrix composites. Emphasis is placed on the theoretical formulation of the different constitutive models in this area, but sections are added to demonstrate the applications of the theory. In addition, some sections contain new material that has not appeared before in the literature. The book is divided into three major parts: Part I deals with the scalar formulation and is limited to the analysis of isotropic damage in materials; Parts II and III deal with the tensor formulation and is applied to general states of deformation and damage. The material appearing in this text is limited to plastic deformation and damage in ductile materials (e.g. metals and metal matrix composites) but excludes many of the recent advances made in creep, brittle fracture, and temperature effects since the authors feel that these topics require a separate volume for this presentation. Furthermore, the applications presented in this book are the simplest possible ones and are mainly based on the uniaxial tension test.
