In its 38th year, A Manual of Orthopaedic Terminology has been a companion reference for anyone who needs the most up-to-date terms, acronyms, and codes terms relating to clinical orthopaedics and research. Portable and easily accessible, this authoritative compilation categorizes and cross-references terms to enable those unfamiliar with orthopaedics to locate a term in its proper context.  Unlike a traditional A-Z dictionary format, terms are organized by topic—facilitating faster search results with related terms appearing on the same or immediately adjacent page.

"...It will continue to serve as the go-to reference for individuals needing to access orthopaedic information to serve their individual audiences." Foreword by: Marc F. Swiontkowski,Professor, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Minnesota, Feb 2015

Cobertura temática: Ciencias biológicas

Codonopsis and its allied genera, are a group of plants which are important in economy and horticulture. A Monograph of Codonopsis and Allied Genera (Campanulaceae s. str.) offers its audience comprehensive knowledge of these plants including palynology, cytology, population biology, morphological description, geographical distribution with vouchers cited, excellent ink illustrations, and color photos, and keys to genera and to species.

This excellent work will facilitate identification of relevant plants, use of plant resources, assessment of endangered states, the development of conservation strategies, and will promote systematic and evolutionary research of this group.

  • Provides comprehensive descriptions and classifications of Codonopsis and allied genera
  • Richly illustrated with line drawings and high-quality color photographs
  • Delineates and clarifies the relationships of Codonopsis and its allied groups based on the analyses using data from external morphology, pollen morphology, chromosomes, and molecular biology

Cobertura temática: Matemáticas - Ciencias biológicas

A New Concept for Tuning Design Weights in Survey Sampling: Jackknifing in Theory and Practice introduces the new concept of tuning design weights in survey sampling by presenting three concepts: calibration, jackknifing, and imputing where needed. This new methodology allows survey statisticians to develop statistical software for analyzing data in a more precisely and friendly way than with existing techniques.

  • Explains how to calibrate design weights in survey sampling
  • Discusses how Jackknifing is needed in design weights in survey sampling
  • Describes how design weights are imputed in survey sampling

A New Look at Mechanisms in Bioenergetics features eight lectures based on the Robbins Lectures given at Pomona College in April 1973. These lectures are based mainly on the author's own laboratory work and are intended for students of biology and biochemistry who want to devote their lives to research.
Lecture 1 presents some of the general lessons learned from research in the field of bioenergetics. It also discusses methods for measuring oxidative phosphorylation and the resolution of soluble multienzyme systems. Lecture 2 explains the biochemical approach to the problem of photophosphorylation. Lecture 3 considers the intersection of oxidative phosphorylation and membranology. Lecture 4 discusses the coupling device and its partial reactions. Lecture 5 focuses on the oxidation chain in mitochondria. Lecture 6 discusses the resolution and reconstitution of oxidative phosphorylation. Lecture 7 examines the reconstitution of ion pumps. Finally, Lecture 8 covers oxidation control in glycolysis; the high aerobic glycolysis of tumor cells; ATPases in tumor cells; and the repair of ion pumps in tumor cells.

A Pharmacology Primer: Techniques for More Effective and Strategic Drug Discovery, 4th Edition features the latest ideas and research about the application of pharmacology to the process of drug discovery to equip readers with a deeper understanding of the complex and rapid changes in this field. Written by well-respected pharmacologist, Terry P. Kenakin, this primer is an indispensable resource for all those involved in drug discovery. This edition has been thoroughly revised to include material on data-driven drug discovery, biased signaling, structure-based drug design, drug activity screening, drug development (including pharmacokinetics and safety Pharmacology), and much more. With more color illustrations, examples, and exercises throughout, this book remains a top reference for all industry and academic scientists and students directly involved in drug discovery, or pharmacologic research.

  • Highlights changes surrounding the strategy of drug discovery to provide you with a comprehensive reference featuring advances in the methods involved in lead optimization and more effective drug discovery
  • Includes a new chapter on data-driven drug discovery in terms of the optimal design of pharmacological experiments to identify mechanism of action of new molecules
  • Illustrates the application of rapid inexpensive assays to predict activity in the therapeutic setting, showing data outcomes and the limitations inherent in interpreting this data
