Cobertura temática

Increasing pressure on global reserves of petroleum at a time of growing demand for personal transport in developing countries, together with concerns over atmospheric pollution and carbon dioxide emissions, are leading to a requirement for more sustainable forms of road transport. Major improvements in the efficiency of all types of road vehicles are called for, along with the use of fuels derived from alternative sources, or entirely new fuels. Towards Sustainable Road Transport first describes the evolution of vehicle designs and propulsion technologies over the past two centuries, before looking forward to possible new forms of energy to substitute for petroleum. The book also discusses the political and socio-economic drivers for change, investigates barriers to their broad implementation, and outlines the state-of-the-art of candidate power sources, advanced vehicle design, and associated infrastructure. The comprehensive technical informationsupplied by an expert author team ensures that Towards Sustainable Road Transport will provide readers with a clear understanding of the ongoing progress in this field and the challenges still to be faced.
  • Drivers of technological change in road transport and the infrastructure requirements
  • Discussion of alternative fuels for internal combustion engines and fuel conversion technologies
  • Detailed exploration of current and emerging options for vehicle propulsion, with emphasis on hybrid/ battery electric traction, hydrogen, and fuel cells
  • Comparative analysis of vehicle design requirements, primary power source efficiency, and energy storage systems

Cobertura temática

This Training Guide provides training material to address training needs and offers guidance on how to adapt the core material to local conditions through the national training programmes. This Training Guide focuses on the some of the key principles of integrated pest management (IPM) and appropriate use of crop protection agents (CPAs), such as insecticides, fungicides and herbicides. Through training on the topics in the Training Guide, farmers and field technicians will learn tactics for reducing unnecessary CPA use, they will find out how to select less toxic CPAs which are registered for use on tobacco, and in particular they will learn how to manage CPAs appropriately. This Training Guide is targeted at the core training team in each country. The core teams will be responsible for leading the implementation of their national training programmes. The goal of the Training Guide is to provide them with the necessary tools to design and implement a training programme to support the implementation of IPM and appropriate use of CPAs. This Training Guide presents a core training package with detailed curricula to address all aspects of responsible CPA management.

Troubled Waters: Confronting the Water Crisis in Australia's Cities

Cobertura temática

Australian cities have traditionally relied for their water on a ‘predict-and-provide’ philosophy that gives primacy to big engineering solutions. In more recent years privatised water authorities, seeking to maximise consumption and profits, have reinforced the emphasis on increasing supply. Now the cities must cope with the stresses these policies have imposed on the eco-systems from which they harvest water, into which they discharge wastes, and on which they are located. Residents are having to pay more for their water, while the cities themselves are becoming less sustainable. Must we build more dams and desalination plants, or should we be managing the demand for urban water more prudently? This book explores the demand for urban water and how it has changed in response to shifting social mores over the past century. It explains how demand for centralised provision of water might be reshaped to enable the cities to better cope with expected changes in supply as our climate changes. And it discusses the implications of property rights in water for proposals to privatise water services.

Cobertura temática

Natural gas, especially unconventional gas, has an increasingly important role in meeting the world's energy needs. Experts estimate that it has the potential to add anywhere from 60-250% to the global proven gas reserve in the next two decades. To maintain pace with increasing global demand, Unconventional Gas Reservoirs provides the necessary bridge into the newer processes, approaches and designs to help identify these more uncommon reservoirs available and how to maximize its unconventional potential.

Loaded with reservoir development and characterization strategies, this book will show you how to:

  • Recognize the challenges and opportunities surrounding unconventional gas reservoirs
  • Distinguish among the various types of unconventional reservoirs, such as shale gas, coalbed methane, and tight gas formations
  • Drill down and quantify the reservoir’s economic potential and other critical considerations
  • Gain practical insights and tools to efficiently identify, appraise, and develop unconventional gas reservoirs
  • Understand various techniques used to analyze reservoir parameters and performance as well as how they were applied to numerous real-world case studies
  • Upgrade to the latest information on perspectives and insights with discussion of key differences used for today’s unconventional gas characterization versus original conventional methods that failed in the past
