Agricultural Systems is an international journal that deals with interactions - among the components of agricultural systems, among hierarchical levels of agricultural systems, between agricultural and other land use systems, and between agricultural systems and their natural, social and economic environments. Manuscripts submitted to Agricultural Systems generally should include both of the following:Substantive natural science content (especially farm- or landscape-level biology or ecology, sometimes combined with social sciences), and Substantive analysis and discussion of the interactions within or among agricultural systems components and other systems. Preference is given to manuscripts that address whole-farm and landscape level issues, via integration of conceptual, empirical and dynamic modelling approaches.

The scope includes the development and application of systems analysis methodologies in the following areas:Systems approaches in the sustainable intensification of agriculture; pathways for sustainable intensification; crop-livestock integration; farm-level resource allocation; quantification of benefits and trade-offs at farm to landscape levels; integrative, participatory and dynamic modelling approaches for qualitative and quantitative assessments of agricultural systems and decision making; The interactions between agricultural and non-agricultural landscapes; the multiple services of agricultural systems; food security and the environment; Global change and adaptation science; transformational adaptations as driven by changes in climate, policy, values and attitudes influencing the design of farming systems; Development and application of farming systems design tools and methods for impact, scenario and case study analysis; managing the complexities of dynamic agricultural systems; innovation systems and multi stakeholder arrangements that support or promote change and (or) inform policy decisions. The following subjects are discouraged:Econometric, descriptive or other statistical (correlation) analysis of farm, farming systems or household survey data that exclude systems analytical approaches (particularly cross-sectional adoption or economic efficiency studies), landscapes (including the development of typologies), land use change studies, results from crop or livestock trials or other economic analyses without substantive natural science content; Conceptual frameworks without empirical implementation (unless submitted as a short communication) Studies focusing on specific chemical constituents of plant or animal species or their products; Studies of the operation or efficiency of agricultural or food processing machinery, or of agricultural supply chains without a substantive biological component;Such subjects are not considered for publication unless they clearly provide substantive and highly generalizable new insights regarding processes operating at farm or landscape levels or describe novel analytical methods applicable to a wide variety of agricultural systems.

The journal publishes original scientific papers, short communications. Review articles and book reviews should only be submitted after consultation with the editors. Review papers generally should focus on the application of specific methods rather than descriptive analyses of agricultural production systems or supply chains.

Agricultural Waste Management: Problems, Processes, and Approaches is a summary of the processes and approaches applicable to the solution of agricultural waste management problems. This book is organized into three part encompassing 13 chapters that is intended as a bridge between theory and practice as well as between the many disciplines that are involved in agricultural waste management. The primary focus of agricultural waste management is on the obvious problems of odor control and feedlot runoff.
The first part looks into the status of agricultural waste problem and the application of engineering and scientific fundamentals to the management of these wastes. This part also deals with the role of the land in waste management, and then outlines the guidelines for the development of feasible waste management systems. The second part describes the fundamentals, principles, and benefits of various waste management processes, including biological processes, ponds and lagoons, aerobic, anaerobic, physical, and chemical treatments, and nitrogen control; as well as treatment systems, such as ponds, lagoons, and land disposal. The third part examines the integration of the most economical and equitable combination of alternative technologies into feasible waste management approaches.
This work will be of great value to agricultural producers and manufacturers, scientists, and engineers.

The journal publishes papers of international significance relating to the science, economics, and policy of agricultural water management. In all cases, manuscripts must address implications and provide insight regarding agricultural water management.

The primary topics that we consider are the following:
• Farm-level and regional water management
• Crop water relations, crop yields and water productivity
• Irrigation, drainage, and salinity in cultivated areas
• Salinity management and strategies for improving the use of saline water in agriculture
• Rainwater harvesting and crop water management in rainfed areas
• Use of wastewater and other low quality waters in agriculture
• Groundwater management in agriculture and conjunctive use of groundwater and surface water
• Implications of groundwater and surface water management on nutrient cycling
• Exploitation and protection of agricultural water resources.

Additional topics of interest include interactions between agricultural water management and the environment (flooding, soil erosion, nutrient loss and depletion, non-point source pollution, water quality, desertification, and the potential implications of global climate change for agricultural water management), and the institutional and regulatory aspects of agricultural water management (water pricing, allocation and competition).

Papers in these categories must draw direct and practical linkages to agricultural water management. Manuscripts drawing generalised conclusions, such as that competition for water will increase in future, or that less water will be available for agriculture, are unlikely to be considered.

Also, manuscripts describing basic soil-water-plant relationships, basic engineering and hydrology, or methods of estimating evapotranspiration will be considered only if the discussion is relevant to the active management of water in agriculture and the information enhances international literature.
