Introduction

Jonathan Hassell

The Indexing Service catalogs documents without needing them reformatted to a special, proprietary format, allowing Microsoft Office file formats, including the common Word and Excel documents, and those types of files indexed by the service to be available immediately and without any sort of special processing required. This lets you find the files you need quickly, with minimal effort.

Installing SBS 2003

Jonathan Hassell

In this short but sweet chapter, we’ve looked at some considerations and issues to address when you first pick out a server to run SBS 2003, and then we went through a detailed installation of SBS 2003 onto a new machine. In Chapter 3, I’ll take you through configuring the SBS server step-by-step and how to get it up and running to serve your business.

Let’s move on.

Jonathan Hassell

In this chapter, we’ve looked at the tools SBS provides to set up both the server and client machines, and we’ve stepped through the To Do list. At this point, your server is set up, your clients are connected to the network, and you are now in a position to delve into the core SBS components (Windows Server 2003, Exchange Server 2003, and so on) and learn about them in detail.

Jonathan Hassell

I’ve covered a lot of material in this chapter: I looked at file and print services within Windows Server 2003, went over some basics of the Active Directory component of the operating system, and then walked through a detailed discussion of Group Policy and its feature set. In the next chapter, I’ll look at Exchange Server 2003 in much the same fashion, going beyond the Management Console and digging into the power of the product.

Exploring SBS Standard Security

Jonathan Hassell

In the next chapter, I’ll look at Exchange Server 2003 in much the same fashion, going beyond the Management Console and digging into the power of the product.

Using Remote Access Features

Jonathan Hassell

In this chapter, we’ve looked at quite a few of the remote access features that SBS offers. Using Outlook Web Access, you can check your e-mail using only a web browser. We also looked at using the full Outlook client remotely, connecting to your office desktop system and working with it from a distance, and using VPNs to connect yourself to your business network like you were sitting in a room in the building.

In short, there is a great deal of focus in SBS 2003 placed on allowing a user to use his normal, day-to-day tools from anywhere, at any time.

The Shared Fax Service

Jonathan Hassell

As I mentioned at the start of the chapter, the SFS has undergone a major revision and is no longer glued on to the SBS release like an afterthought. It is a worthy member of the SBS feature family, and it’s certainly a useful addition to your existing business network.

In this chapter, you’ve seen the benefits of using the SBS Shared Fax Service as opposed to traditional faxing solutions. I’ve showed you how you can integrate sending and receiving faxes into both your existing computer investments and your day-to-day workflow style. We’ve also walked through setting up the SFS, personalizing it, and sending and receiving faxes through it.
