The germination of melon (Cucumis melo L.) is affected with temperatures below 17 ° C. The initial stages are sensitive to salinity. Priming has shown to improve the germination of different species under adverse conditions. Three experiments were performed comparing osmotic agents (polyethylene glycol (PEG), KNO3 + K3PO4, CaCl2 and NaCl) and priming durations (3 and 6 days). The osmotic potential was -1.50 MPa. The percentage of germinated seeds (G%) and the mean germination time (MGT) were measured. At 12 °C the germination was 10% with PEG 3 days and NaCl 6 days, and null in the control. At 25 °C the best G% were 98 and 100% in NaCl and CaCl2 respectively and 3 days, and 84% in the control. MGT was reduced one day. At -0,70 MPa the germination was 100% for CaCl2 and NaCl 3 days, versus 26% of the control. At -1,00 MPa the best G% was 46 and 50% for NaCl and CaCl2 respectively, and zero in the control. Combining 12 °C and -1,00 MPa the best germination was for CaCl2 and NaCl 3 days (14 and 10%). It is concluded that at 12 °C, the increase of G% and MGT, would not justify the use of priming. At 25 °C the priming allows to increase the germination and to reduce the MGT; to a moderate saline stress allows to increase the germination, whereas to -1,00 MPa the increase is not considerable; in cold and severe saline stress there´s a mild increase of the germination.Palabras clave – provistas por el repositorio digital
