A hierarchical decision procedure is proposed for the synthesis of processes, mass integrated to an existing industrial environment. The procedure establishes a hierarchy of decision, such that every already made decision bounds the number of decisions to take in later stages. The procedure uses mass integration methodologies in different levels of the hierarchy. It takes as input, the information about the processes already installed, including their input and output streams, so that the decisions required to complete the new design are made considering this environment. It decides among alternative technologies for the new process and whether to use output streams of the environment as inputs to the new process and vice versa. It also decides whether this should be made implementing new process units to condition these streams. To take advantage of existing methodologies for both synthesis and integration, they had to be adapted.Palabras clave – provistas por el repositorio digital
