A quantum processor based on coherent transport of entangled atom arrays

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>The ability to engineer parallel, programmable operations between desired qubits within a quantum processor is key for building scalable quantum information systems<jats:sup>1,2</jats:sup>. In most state-of-the-art approaches, qubits interact locally, constrained by the connectivity associated with their fixed spatial layout. Here we demonstrate a quantum processor with dynamic, non-local connectivity, in which entangled qubits are coherently transported in a highly parallel manner across two spatial dimensions, between layers of single- and two-qubit operations. Our approach makes use of neutral atom arrays trapped and transported by optical tweezers; hyperfine states are used for robust quantum information storage, and excitation into Rydberg states is used for entanglement generation<jats:sup>3–5</jats:sup>. We use this architecture to realize programmable generation of entangled graph states, such as cluster states and a seven-qubit Steane code state<jats:sup>6,7</jats:sup>. Furthermore, we shuttle entangled ancilla arrays to realize a surface code state with thirteen data and six ancillary qubits<jats:sup>8</jats:sup> and a toric code state on a torus with sixteen data and eight ancillary qubits<jats:sup>9</jats:sup>. Finally, we use this architecture to realize a hybrid analogue–digital evolution<jats:sup>2</jats:sup> and use it for measuring entanglement entropy in quantum simulations<jats:sup>10–12</jats:sup>, experimentally observing non-monotonic entanglement dynamics associated with quantum many-body scars<jats:sup>13,14</jats:sup>. Realizing a long-standing goal, these results provide a route towards scalable quantum processing and enable applications ranging from simulation to metrology.</jats:p>

Global seasonal forecasts of marine heatwaves

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>Marine heatwaves (MHWs)—periods of exceptionally warm ocean temperature lasting weeks to years—are now widely recognized for their capacity to disrupt marine ecosystems<jats:sup>1–3</jats:sup>. The substantial ecological and socioeconomic impacts of these extreme events present significant challenges to marine resource managers<jats:sup>4–7</jats:sup>, who would benefit from forewarning of MHWs to facilitate proactive decision-making<jats:sup>8–11</jats:sup>. However, despite extensive research into the physical drivers of MHWs<jats:sup>11,12</jats:sup>, there has been no comprehensive global assessment of our ability to predict these events. Here we use a large multimodel ensemble of global climate forecasts<jats:sup>13,14</jats:sup> to develop and assess MHW forecasts that cover the world’s oceans with lead times of up to a year. Using 30 years of retrospective forecasts, we show that the onset, intensity and duration of MHWs are often predictable, with skilful forecasts possible from 1 to 12 months in advance depending on region, season and the state of large-scale climate modes, such as the El Niño/Southern Oscillation. We discuss considerations for setting decision thresholds based on the probability that a MHW will occur, empowering stakeholders to take appropriate actions based on their risk profile. These results highlight the potential for operational MHW forecasts, analogous to forecasts of extreme weather phenomena, to promote climate resilience in global marine ecosystems.</jats:p>

Climate effects on archaic human habitats and species successions

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>It has long been believed that climate shifts during the last 2 million years had a pivotal role in the evolution of our genus <jats:italic>Homo</jats:italic><jats:sup>1–3</jats:sup>. However, given the limited number of representative palaeo-climate datasets from regions of anthropological interest, it has remained challenging to quantify this linkage. Here, we use an unprecedented transient Pleistocene coupled general circulation model simulation in combination with an extensive compilation of fossil and archaeological records to study the spatiotemporal habitat suitability for five hominin species over the past 2 million years. We show that astronomically forced changes in temperature, rainfall and terrestrial net primary production had a major impact on the observed distributions of these species. During the Early Pleistocene, hominins settled primarily in environments with weak orbital-scale climate variability. This behaviour changed substantially after the mid-Pleistocene transition, when archaic humans became global wanderers who adapted to a wide range of spatial climatic gradients. Analysis of the simulated hominin habitat overlap from approximately 300–400 thousand years ago further suggests that antiphased climate disruptions in southern Africa and Eurasia contributed to the evolutionary transformation of <jats:italic>Homo heidelbergensis</jats:italic> populations into <jats:italic>Homo sapiens</jats:italic> and Neanderthals, respectively. Our robust numerical simulations of climate-induced habitat changes provide a framework to test hypotheses on our human origin.</jats:p>
