Functional Genomics: It's All How You Read It
Philip Hieter; Mark Boguski
Hieter and Boguski describe the new era of functional genomics that is being entered as the mapping and sequencing (structural genomics) phase of the Human Genome Project draws to a close. Functional genomics involves the development of global experimental approaches for analyzing gene function by utilizing information and reagents provided by structural genomics. Functional genomic data needs to be generated by rigorous experiments to allow a fair evaluation of the emerging technologies. The data should also be made publicly accessible in order for the scientific community to gain maximum benefit.

Predictive Genetic Testing: From Basic Research to Clinical Practice
Neil A. Holtzman; Patricia D. Murphy; Michael S. Watson; Patricia A. Barr
As increasing numbers of genes are identified and associated with human diseases, researchers are considering how to bring their discoveries from the research bench to the clinic. Holtzman, Murphy, Watson, and Barr, who were part of a Task Force on Genetic Testing sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and U.S. Department of Energy, discuss policies for regulating the development of genetic tests so that the full potential of gene discovery to help the general population can be realized.
