Sexual Dysfunction
Nancy Gambescia; Gerald Weeks
Homework assignments continue to be the most effective way of optimizing therapeutic gains in the treatment of sexual dysfunctions. Some of the treatments for sexual dysfunctions, including the use of homework, have been scientifically supported. Other treatments have been used with varying degrees of reported efficacy but have not been empirically validated. Nonetheless, sex therapy homework typically involves a combination of psychoeducation, bibliotherapy, communication skills, and physical exercises. In all cases, homework requires collaboration, judicious preparation, and careful timing in order to promote compliance and prevent relapse. The authors have found that homework that is intersystemic is most comprehensive since it addresses individual factors, relational problems, and internalized messages from the partners’ families of origin.
