What Can We Do About School Violence?

Melissa Laracuenta; Florence L. Denmark

The current research regarding school violence addresses the range of issues from prevention and identification of at-risk students to intervention and what to do in the wake of a violent tragedy. With all of the information regarding violence in the literature, it may be overwhelming or confusing for those who work directly with the students to know what to do. This chapter attempts to clarify what people can do to reduce and address school violence. From the data presented in this chapter, several conclusions and implications can be made. School violence must be addressed on multiple levels, including the school, home, and community. All of these settings should collaborate in order to establish clear strategies for addressing violent behaviors. Within the school, all staff that interacts with students, as well as the students themselves, is an integral part of violence intervention. Together, hopefully violence can be reduced and the schools can become a safer place to foster children’s development.
