Applications. MultiLezi: Implementation of an Adaptive Multichannel Learning Environment

T. Barbieri; A. Bianchi; S. Bruna; L. Mainetti; L. Sbattella

The MAIS general architecture enables system designers to provide a range of modalities and channels and to assess the effect that combined technologies may have in helping people with disabilities to access information. MultiLezi, the prototype learning environment described in this chapter, shows that multichannel and multimodal access to information, in combination with user profiling and adaptive navigation structures, provides a golden opportunity to promote the inclusion of persons with disabilities at the sensorial and cognitive levels, and to facilitate their access to digital information. MultiLezi also shows that more channels and more modalities, such as text simplification or natural dialogue on the phone, can be used and alternated in a single session, as means of navigation to offer more opportunities to reach content, in various contexts and for users with various abilities. Tests in progress confirm the relevance of our global approach. Future work will be devoted to finding efficient transcoding techniques, to help developers repurpose content for each specific channel on which they want to deliver.
