The transport of heavy metals (HM) like chromium in surface waters is strongly linked to the sediment transport, because HM tend to transport themselves mostly sorbed to the suspended sediments, specifically to the fine fraction which is the fraction prone to flocculate. In this context, where flocculation plays a major role in the deposition process of suspended sediments with sorbed HM, bed sediments become the last sink of HM. In this Thesis from the work done in the field, it is demonstrated that under low discharge conditions, within the reach of the Salado river under evaluation: the chromium source (from a local tannery) generates a particular flocculation phenomena, which increases the floc diameters up to 200%; and it consequently increases the sedimentation velocity and the sediment deposition rates up to an order of magnitude. The flux of chromium from the source quickly decreases in a spatial scale of 300 m, because of the fast deposition of flocculated sediments (with sorbed chromium) which happens in the same spatial and temporal scales. Consequently the flocculation-sorption-deposition process explains the rapid decrease in the chromium flux from the water column. Thus the spatial scale of the chromium transport in the water column is determined by the flocculation induced by the same chromium source. This conclusion is then confirmed by the laboratory results.Palabras clave – provistas por el repositorio digital
