In this Thesis the resolution of transient free surface flow problems is considered for incompressible, viscous and Newtonian fluids, in a laminar and isothermal flow regime without surface tension effects, for two and three spatial dimensions by proposing two strategies based on stabilized finite elements. The first methodology, an interface-capturing arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian one, solves in each time step the Navier-Stokes equations, the free surface displacement and, finally, adapts the mesh to the new geometric shape of the spatial domain. In this paradigm, the numerical instabilities during the free surface movement are avoided, either through a smoothing operator or by solving a numerically stabilized transport equation for the interface, being appropriate for small displacement problems without interface breaking-up. The second strategy, an interface-capturing one, simulates the flow of two fluids, each one indicated with a positive or negative value for the function, while the zero level set constitutes the interface. For that, three stages are considered: first, the Navier-Stokes equations are solved, considering that the physical properties in each phase depend on the level set function value; the second stage solves the level set function transport through a conventional advection step; in the third one, that function is reinitialized by solving a continuous differential operator such that certain properties are verified over the transition between fluids. This methodology is applicable to large interface displacements and admits breaking-up or folding of the interface. Both proposals are addressed by parallel programming, while the obtained resuls allow their validation.
