In the agricultural industry, diffusional drug-release devices are being used as a means for controlling insects in cattle. The overall goal of this project is the design of optimal shape devices that will be able to release an almost constant amount of drug per unit of time. A first step is the development of models for simulating such processes and the design of efficient numerical solvers. We propose as a model a diffusion equation which takes as domain the union of two parts, one corresponding to the device and the other to the external world. That is a parabolic equation with discontinuous diffusion coefficient which takes a different value in the device and in the environment. Moreover, these coefficients are in general of very different orders of magnitude, which causes a loss of regularity in the solution and creates difficulties for numerically solving the equations. Therefore, we propose a adaptive finite element method in which we use a posteriori estimates robust error whose bounds of the error do not present the ratio between the maximum and minimum diffusion coefficient, which decreases the computational cost for a given tolerance. With this method we develop an efficient computational tool to simulate, given a specific form, the diffusion on a device and in the surrounding environment simultaneously. Finally the method is used to study the effect of the shape of the device on the release profile, allowing us to draw preliminary conclusions.
