The third edition of Optical Networks continues to be the authoritative source for information on optical networking technologies and techniques. Componentry and transmission are discussed in detail with emphasis on practical networking issues that affect organizations as they evaluate, deploy, or develop optical networks. New updates in this rapidly changing technology are introduced. These updates include sections on pluggable optical transceivers, ROADM (reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer), and electronic dispersion compensation. Current standards updates such as G.709 OTN, as well as, those for GPON, EPON, and BPON are featured. Expanded discussions on multimode fiber with additional sections on photonic crystal and plastic fibers, as well as expanded coverage of Ethernet and Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS).

This book clearly explains all the hard-to-find information on architecture, control and management. It serves as your guide at every step of optical networking-- from planning to implementation through ongoing maintenance. This book is your key to thoroughly understanding practical optical networks.

  • In-depth coverage of optimization, design, and management of the components and transmission of optical networks.
  • Filled with examples, figures, and problem sets to aid in development of dependable, speedy networks.
  • Focuses on practical, networking-specific issues: everything you need to know to implement currently available optical solutions.

This book appears at a time of intense activity in optical phase conjugation. We chose not to await the maturation of the field, but instead to provide this material in time to be useful in its development. We have tried very hard to elucidate and interrelate the various nonlinear phenomena which can be used for optical phase conjugation.

Optical Processing and Computing is a collection of research from the USA, Canada, Russia, and Poland on the developments in the fields of digital optical computing and analog optical processing.
This book is organized into 15 chapters and begins with an overview of the hierarchy of interconnect problems. Some chapters deal with the fundamental limitations and capabilities of optics in relation to interconnections, switching, computing, materials, and devices. Other chapters explore the architectures, technology, and applications of the field. The topics range from promising areas in the early stages of development, such as nonlinear effects in fibers that could bring about the optical transistor, to developments in areas ready for technology, such as the production of optical kinoforms, an important type of computer-generated optical component.
With a strong focus on the fundamental aspects of the field, this book is of interest to specialists, researchers, and students who need a broad coverage of the principles of optical computing and of the underlying physics.

Optical Properties of Inhomogeneous Materials: Applications to Geology, Astronomy, Chemistry, and Engineering reviews the results of studies of the optical properties of inhomogeneous materials and provides a guide for solving a number of related scientific and engineering problems based on these studies. Some of these studies focus on the surface and atmosphere of Mars, the earth's atmosphere, and the interstellar medium. The tools necessary for modeling the radiation scattered from diffuse surfaces are also described.

Comprised of 12 chapters, this book begins with a brief introduction to the formalism for optical properties of inhomogeneous materials, followed by a description of surface scattering models in order of increasing complexity and a discussion of atmospheric scattering by particulates. The experimental approaches for the determination of the refractive and absorptive components of the optical complex indices of refraction are then considered. Subsequent chapters present actual diffuse surface modeling examples and discuss applications such as remote sensing of planetary surfaces; study of the interstellar medium; research on thermal energy collectors; analysis of coatings and paints; and remote mineral exploration.

This monograph will be of interest to scientists, students, and researchers in different disciplines such as geology, optical mineralogy, astronomy, chemistry, soil mechanics, mechanical engineering, and optics.

Optical Signal Processing is a collection of synopses of the works of many experts in the different fields of optical signal processing. The book also includes systems or algorithms that have been successfully tried and used.

The monograph is divided into seven parts. Part I discusses color image processing and white-light Fourier transformations, while Part II covers topics related to pattern recognition such as optical feature extraction and unconventional correlators. Part III deals with temporal signal processing and its related optical architectures, acoustooptic synthetic aperture radar processors, and acoustooptic signal processors. Part IV tackles nonlinear optical processors and waveguide devices. Part V discusses optical and tomographic transformation. Part VI deals with optical numeric processing, optical linear algebra processors, and related algorithm and software. Part VII talks about devices and components and their applications such as fiber-optic delay-line signal processors and spatial light modulators.

The text is recommended for engineers and scientists in the field of optical signal processing, especially those who would like to know more of its advancements.

Optical Techniques in Biological Research discusses the fundamentals and applications of light scattering, Raman scattering, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nanosecond fluorescence spectroscopy, and circular dichroism. Electron microscopy is also included owing to some of its classical similarity to optical microscopy optical structural and resonance techniques for biological research. The chapters are aimed at a level such that only a general understanding of chemistry and biology is required. The objective is to present material in a way that allows the research worker to assess quickly the applicability, utility, and significance of the specific technique to his or her problem or field of interest. Together with Structural and Resonance Techniques in Biological Research, this book marks the introduction of a new series of volumes, Physical Techniques in Biology and Medicine, which is intended to replace a previous treatise, Physical Techniques in Biological Research.
