The second edition of the Fundamental Aspects of Pollution Control and Environmental Science 6: Microbiological Aspects of Pollution Control summarizes the advances in the use of microorganisms to remove pollutants from the environment and to recycle essential materials. It discusses practical aspects such as sewage treatment, the theoretical aspects, including the genetics of biodegradation of pesticides, and the ways in which the biochemical capabilities of microorganisms can be maximized.
Comprised of 11 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of how microorganisms produce chemical pollutants, such as mycotoxins and phytotoxins. It then discusses how microorganisms can contribute to air pollution, the effect of air pollutants on microorganisms, and the health hazards arising from water-borne pathogens. The book also provides the assessment of the quality of surface waters, sewage or sewage effluents, and industrial effluents. It explains the microbiological examination of pharmaceutical products. Sewage treatment by methods such as biological filtration, disinfection and recycling of water; eutrophication; thermal pollution; sulfur cycle and waste recovery; oil pollution; and the process of biodegradation are also described.
Engineers will find this book extremely helpful for the study of the microbiological aspects of pollution and possible solutions.

Microbiological Assay: An Introduction to Quantitative Principles and Evaluation aims to provide an introduction to the principles of microbiological assay, assay design, and calculation procedures.
Organized into nine chapters, this book begins with the philosophy of biological assay, as well as the method’s basic techniques, principles, mechanization, automation, purpose, reference standards, specifications, and reports. It also looks into the preparation of test solutions of standard and sample. Some chapters follow explaining the specific methods, such as agar diffusion assay and tube assay; others explore the statistical evaluation of these assays. Features of assay design, such as replication, number of dose levels, and spacing of dose levels, are also described.
This book will serve as an elementary introduction to this field of interest to help encourage a less empirical approach to the subject.

Microbiological Quality of Foods contains the proceedings of a conference held in Franconia, New Hampshire, on August 27-29, 1962. Contributors review the state of knowledge of foodborne diseases and discuss the use and efficiency of microbiological tests and standards for food quality from the academic, regulatory, and industrial standpoints. Problems related to the use of microorganisms as an index of food quality are given special attention. This book includes a consideration of total counts, coliforms, fecal streptococci, and the detection of specific pathogens.
This text is organized into 26 chapters and begins with an overview of the status of microbiological tests and standards that have been developed to ensure food quality. The book then discusses the concerns of regulators at the federal and local levels concerning food microbiology, particularly the safety or wholesomeness of foods. The next chapters focus on industry perspectives regarding food safety; the role of universities in food microbiological research; and problems and challenges presented by foodborne diseases. The book also introduces the reader to staphylococcal enterotoxins, halophilic bacteria, botulism, and Clostridium perfringens that causes food poisoning.
This book is a valuable resource for those involved in food microbiology, science and technology, and industry; bacteriology; and public health.

Microbiological risk assessment (MRA) is one of the most important recent developments in food safety management. Adopted by Codex Alimentarius and many other international bodies, it provides a structured way of identifying and assessing microbiological risks in food. Edited by two leading authorities, and with contributions by international experts in the field, Microbiological risk assessment provides a detailed coverage of the key steps in MRA and how it can be used to improve food safety.

The book begins by placing MRA within the broader context of the evolution of international food safety standards.
Part one introduces the key steps in MRA methodology. A series of chapters discusses each step, starting with hazard identification and characterisation before going on to consider exposure assessment and risk characterisation. Given its importance, risk communication is also covered. Part two then considers how MRA can be implemented in practice. There are chapters on implementing the results of a microbiological risk assessment and on the qualitative and quantitative tools available in carrying out a MRA. It also discusses the relationship of MRA to the use of microbiological criteria and another key tool in food safety management, Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) systems.

With its authoritative coverage of both principles and key issues in implementation, Microbiological risk assessment in food processing is a standard work on one of the most important aspects of food safety management.
  • Provides a detailed coverage of the key steps in microbiological risk assessment (MRA) and how it can be used to improve food safety
  • Places MRA within the broader context of the evolution of international food safety standards
  • Introduces the key steps in MRA methodology, considers exposure assessment and risk characterisation, and covers risk communication

Microbiology for Surgical Infections: Diagnosis, Prognosis and Treatment explores current trends in etiology and antibiotic resistance of pathogens responsible for devastating and complex surgical infections. Clinicians and researchers report the most recent advances in diagnostic approaches to bacterial and non-bacterial surgical infections, including invasive fungal infections. Current guidelines for prophylaxis of community-acquired and nosocomial infections, complications in surgery, and improvement of diagnosis and treatment of these devastating surgical infections are also discussed.

The work gives specific attention to intra-abdominal and wound infections, as well as infections in cardiac surgery and neurosurgery. Taken together, these explorations inform the work of specialists in different surgical arenas, as well as those working in microbiology.

Microbiology for Surgical Infections provides a resource to those working to improve outcomes in this complicated arena by discussing prospects for future study and identifying targets for future research.

  • Provides a multi-dimensional view of myriad topics pertinent to surgical infections, including questions of etiology, pathogenesis, host-microbial interactions, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and prophylaxis
  • Delivers cutting-edge commentary from eminent surgeons, microbiologists, and infectious disease specialists, with global contributions from both the developed and developing worlds

Microbiology of Aerial Plant Surfaces is composed of papers presented at a meeting held at the University of Leeds in September, 1975. The content covers progress in work on the aerial surfaces of plants during the years 1970-1975.
Organized into 31 chapters, the book begins with the aspects of the structure and development of the aerial surfaces of higher plants. It then elucidates some effects of fungicides and other agrochemicals on the microbiology of the aerial surfaces of plants; effects of air pollution on the structure and function of plant-surface microbial ecosystems; and the aerial microclimate around plant surfaces. Some other topics discussed include the taxonomy of bacteria on the aerial parts of plants; fungi on the aerial surfaces of higher plants; and distribution of yeasts and yeast-like organisms on aerial surfaces of developing apples and grapes. Furthermore, the book explains the saprophytes on plant surfaces in maritime areas and antagonism between fungal saprophytes and pathogens on aerial plant surfaces.
