In recent years, rapid technological advances and changes in agricultural management have taken place. These have yielded benefits to society but have also generated new and significant environmental problems. Novel questions and challenges relating to agricultural practice and soil microbial ecology, ecotoxicology, biotechnology, and bioremediation must be addressed. As a consequence, the fields of soil microbiology and biochemistry have been highlighted.
This book provides a modern, authoritative, and comprehensive collection of methods for the study of soil microbiology and biochemistry. Classical and modern, aerobic and anerobic, laboratory and field-based methods are presented. Detailed techniques are given, but in addition the theoretical basis behind such methodology is described, so that the origins and principles of the techniques are clear to the reader. Particular emphasis has been placed on uniform, simple, and clear presentation of the different methods.
With respect to bioremediation of soils, this work provides a unique bridge between general and applied soil microbiology and biochemistry, presenting an integrated discussion of concepts, theories, and methods. This book will be essential for all scientists and students actively involved in natural and environmental sciences and engineering, and for those working in industry, authorities, and consulting companies.

*
* Uniform and clear presentation of the different methods.
* Bridges the gap between general and applied soil microbiology.
* Maintains a balanced discussion of concepts, theories, and methods.
* Essential reading for all scientists and students involved in natural and environmental sciences and anyone working in the industry.

Beginning with a survey of fundamental concepts associated with data integration, knowledge representation, and hypothesis generation from heterogeneous data sets, Methods in Biomedical Informatics provides a practical survey of methodologies used in biological, clinical, and public health contexts. These concepts provide the foundation for more advanced topics like information retrieval, natural language processing, Bayesian modeling, and learning classifier systems. The survey of topics then concludes with an exposition of essential methods associated with engineering, personalized medicine, and linking of genomic and clinical data. Within an overall context of the scientific method, Methods in Biomedical Informatics provides a practical coverage of topics that is specifically designed for: (1) domain experts seeking an understanding of biomedical informatics approaches for addressing specific methodological needs; or (2) biomedical informaticians seeking an approachable overview of methodologies that can be used in scenarios germane to biomedical research.

  • Contributors represent leading biomedical informatics experts: individuals who have demonstrated effective use of biomedical informatics methodologies in the real-world, high-quality biomedical applications
  • Material is presented as a balance between foundational coverage of core topics in biomedical informatics with practical "in-the-trenches" scenarios.
  • Contains appendices that function as primers on: (1) Unix; (2) Ruby; (3) Databases; and (4) Web Services.

Methods in Food Analysis Applied to Food Products deals with the principles and the acquired tools of food analysis, emphasizing fruit and vegetable products. The book explains the suitability and limitations of the analytical procedures used for food products, from polarimetry and saccharimetry to colorimetry, spectrophotometry, viscosimetry, acidimetry, and alcoholometry.
This volume is organized into 20 chapters and begins with an overview of sampling and preparation and preservation of sample. Under the physical methods, the principles of the more common procedures are discussed together with their application to the analysis of fruit and vegetable products. A brief account of the nature of the products is included. In presenting the chemical methods, the salient chemical properties of the constituent are first considered, focusing on those properties used in analysis, which is then followed by an outline of the chemistry of several of the available methods. Finally a detailed description of one of the methods, usually as applied to fruit and vegetable products, is explained. Some references to microanalytical, bioassay and bacteriological procedures are made.
This book is intended for food technologists, chemists, and manufacturers; students; and researchers involved in quantitative analyses; organic and inorganic chemistry; and bacteriology.

Methods in Mammalian Reproduction presents some of the techniques for manipulating, analyzing, observing, testing, and generally experimenting with mammalian mothers and their gametes and embryos. Mammalian reproduction involves an intimate relationship between mother and embryo. The first 18 chapters are arranged in an order that follows a developmental sequence from oocyte to fetal organs and the remaining seven chapters deal with the maternal side of the relationship.
With strong focus on laboratory rodents and lagomorphs, the book starts with an introduction to in vitro oocyte maturation and experimental production of mammalian parthenogenetic. It goes on to describe the microtechniques in pre-implantation of embryos, production of chimeras, techniques for early embryonic tissue separation, mammalian embryo preservation by freezing, and in vitro development of whole mouse embryos beyond the implantation stage. Chapters 11-15 discuss the in vitro implantation of mouse blastocysts, advances in rabbit embryo and in large mammal embryo cultures, embryo transfer in large domestic mammals, and manipulation of marsupial embryos and pouch young. The following chapters cover reproduction experiments using marsupials, domestic farm species, and primates including humans. Finally, the concluding chapters tackle the use of amniocentesis in prenatal diagnosis, collection and analysis of female genital tract secretions, analysis of antifertility action of intrauterine devices, and surgical induction of endometriosis.
This book will be helpful to students, teachers, researchers, and clinical researchers who demand for more and better procedures for analysis of mammalian reproduction.

Methods in Mycoplasmology, Volume I: Mycoplasma Characterization is the first of a two-volume series that resulted from cumulative efforts to meet the need for standardized techniques in mycoplasmology. The book is organized into five sections. Section A provides an introduction to the mycoplasmas by discussing their characteristics and classification, mycoplasma-animal host interrelationships, and mycoplasma-plant-insect interrelationships. The chapters in Section B examine the morphological and ultrastructural features of mycoplasmas, using techniques such as phase-contrast microscopy, dark-field microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Section C discusses the cultivation and nutrition of mycoplasmas. Section D focuses on analytical methods for the characterization of mycoplasmas, including harvest and washing procedures, cell lysis and membrane isolation, and crossed immunoelectrophoresis. Section E describes tests designed to detect specific enzymatic activities or nutritional requirements of mycoplasmas. These include sugar fermentation and arginine hydrolysis tests as well as tests to establish the sterol requirement of mycoplasmas. Section F deals with serological tests. These tests either have specific application to detection of mycoplasma antigens or antibody in plant and animal tissues; are useful in identification of specific groups of mycoplasmas (spiroplasmas); or provide higher sensitivity in measurements of antibodies against mycoplasmas.

Methods in Mycoplasmology, Volume II: Diagnostic Mycoplasmology is the second of a two-volume series that resulted from cumulative efforts to meet the need for standardized techniques in mycoplasmology. The book is organized into five sections. Section A discusses techniques for isolating mycoplasmas from humans. These include the recovery of mycoplasmas from the respiratory and genitourinary tracts, from blood and special tissues, and serological Identification of mycoplasmas from humans. Section B focuses on techniques for isolating mycoplasmas from animals, including the recovery and identification of avian, bovine, caprine, ovine, canine, and feline mycoplasmas. Section C presents techniques for isolating mycoplasmas from cell cultures. These include agar and broth techniques, the use of indicator cell lines, and DNA fluorochrome staining. Section D discusses techniques for isolating mycoplasmas from plants and insects. Section E describes some of the techniques that are useful in evaluating the pathogenicity of mycoplasmas, ureaplasmas, and spiroplasmas. Section F defines some of the techniques useful in virus detection by electron microscopy and presents methods for isolating and characterizing viruses from both mycoplasmas and spiroplasmas.
