Biosensors are essential to an ever-expanding range of applications, including healthcare; drug design; detection of biological, chemical, and toxic agents; environmental monitoring; biotechnology; aviation; physics; oceanography; and the protection of civilian and engineering infrastructures. This book, like the previous five books on biosensors by this author (and one by the co-author), addresses the neglected areas of analyte-receptor binding and dissociation kinetics occurring on biosensor surfaces.

Topics are covered in a comprehensive fashion, with homogeneous presentation for the benefit of the reader. The contributors address the economic aspects of biosensors and incorporate coverage of biosensor fabrication and nanobiosensors, among other topics. The comments, comparison, and discussion presented provides a better perspective of where the field of biosensors is heading.

  • Serves as a comprehensive resource on biosensor analysis
  • Examines timely topics such as biosensor fabrication and nanobiosensors
  • Covers economic aspects and medical applications (e.g., the role of analytes in controlling diabetes)

This book is a review of the science and technology of the element carbon and its allotropes: graphite, diamond and the fullerenes. This field has expanded greatly in the last three decades stimulated by many major discoveries such as carbon fibers, low-pressure diamond, and the fullerenes. The need for such a book has been felt for some time. These carbon materials are very different in structure and properties. Some are very old (charcoal), others brand new (the fullerenes). They have different applications and markets and are produced by different segments of the industry.

Few studies are available that attempt to review the entire field of carbon as a whole discipline. Moreover these studies were written several decades ago and a generally outdated since the development of the technology is moving very rapidly and scope of applications is constantly expanding and reaching into new fields such as aerospace, automotive, semiconductors, optics, and electronics. In this book the author provides a valuable, up-to-date account of both the newer and traditional forms of carbon, both naturally occurring and man-made. This volume will be a valuable resource for both specialists in, and occasional users of carbon materials.

Handbook of Ceramics Grinding and Polishing meets the growing need in manufacturing industries for a clear understanding of the latest techniques in ceramics processing. The properties of ceramics make them very useful as components—they withstand high temperatures and are durable, resistant to wear, chemical degradation, and light. In recent years the use of ceramics has been expanding, with applications in most industry sectors that use machined parts, especially where corrosion-resistance is required, and in high temperature environments.

However, they are challenging to produce and their use in high-precision manufacturing often requires adjustments to be made at the micro and nano scale. This book helps ceramics component producers to do cost-effective, highly precise machining. It provides a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of ceramics—their properties and characteristics—and of the abrasive processes used to manipulate their final shape as well as the test procedures vital for success.

The second edition has been updated throughout, with the latest developments in technologies, techniques, and materials. The practical nature of the book has also been enhanced; numerous case studies illustrating how manufacturing (machining) problems have been handled are complemented by a highly practical new chapter on the selection and efficient use of machine tools.

  • Provides readers with experience-based insights into complex and expensive processes, leading to improved quality control, lower failure rates, and cost savings
  • Covers the fundamentals of ceramics side-by-side with processing issues and machinery selection, making this book an invaluable guide for downstream sectors evaluating the use of ceramics, as well as those involved in the manufacturing of structural ceramics
  • Numerous case studies from a wide range of applications (automotive, aerospace, electronics, medical devices)

Handbook of Chemical Vapor Deposition: Principles, Technology and Applications provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of chemical vapor deposition. This book discusses the applications of chemical vapor deposition, which is a relatively flexible technology that can accommodate many variations.

Organized into 12 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the theoretical examination of the chemical vapor deposition process. This text then describes the major chemical reactions and reviews the chemical vapor deposition systems and equipment used in research and production. Other chapters consider the materials deposited by chemical vapor deposition. This book discusses as well the potential applications of chemical vapor deposition in semiconductors and electronics. The final chapter deals with ion implantation as a major process in the fabrication of semiconductors.

This book is a valuable resource for scientists, engineers, and students. Production and marketing managers and suppliers of equipment, materials, and services will also find this book useful.

Turn to this new second edition for an understanding of the latest advances in the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. CVD technology has recently grown at a rapid rate, and the number and scope of its applications and their impact on the market have increased considerably. The market is now estimated to be at least double that of a mere seven years ago when the first edition of this book was published. The second edition is an update with a considerably expanded and revised scope. Plasma CVD and metallo-organic CVD are two major factors in this rapid growth. Readers will find the latest data on both processes in this volume. Likewise, the book explains the growing importance of CVD in production of semiconductor and related applications.
