Food and Drug Regulation in an Era of Globalized Markets provides a synthesized look at the pressures that are impacting today’s markets, including trade liberalization, harmonization initiatives between governments, increased aid activities to low-and middle-income countries, and developing pharmaceutical sectors in China and India.

From the changing nature of packaged and processed food supply chains, to the reorientation of pharmaceutical research and funding coalesced to confront firms, regulators, and consumers are now faced with previously unknown challenges.

Based on the 2014 O’Neill Institute Summer program, this book provides an international, cross-disciplinary look at the changing world of regulations and offers insights into requirements for successful implementation.

  • Interdisciplinary approach allows readers to understand the varying perspectives involved in regulatory development
  • Includes case studies to highlight harmonization efforts and challenges, and to provide practical insights for application going forward
  • Provides a thorough assessment of supply chains, potential gaps, and means of anticipating and addressing issues
  • Presents a comprehensive snapshot of changes in the food safety law in the United States and under international standards, including academic, industry and regulatory perspectives
  • Addresses conflicts and cooperation between relevant US agencies including USDA, FDA, DEA, EPA, FTC and the Department of Commerce

Food and Energy Resources provides an understanding of the influence of energy, land, and water resources on food production. Future supplies of energy resources will have a major impact on the ability of humans to provide themselves with food. A better understanding of these issues will help society make sound choices and enable government leaders to develop and organize the necessary programs for the effective use of energy and food resources.
The book begins with a discussion of the energy flow in the food system. This is followed by chapters that examine alternatives for the use of the external solar energy; the role of energy in world agriculture and food supply; the energy, land, and labor inputs in several major crop systems in northeastern China; and energy and food relationships in developing countries. Subsequent chapters deal with issues such as the use of renewable energy sources and the extent to which agricultural resources are used to produce food or fuel.
This book will provide engineers, economists, agriculturists, geographers, ecologists, nutritionists, sociologists, and natural resource specialists a perspective that will help solve the problem of providing food for people while protecting natural resources.

Food and Natural Resources provides an understanding of the interdependency of food and natural resources that affect society. It is hoped that through these discussions a more complete understanding of these timely issues will emerge. This base of knowledge will help individuals and government leaders develop and implement the types of programs that will result in the effective use and management of land, water, energy, and biological resources for improved food production and a higher standard of living for everyone.
The book begins by examining the intrinsic dynamics of natural ecosystems—especially the land, water, atmosphere, energy, and biological components. This is followed by chapters on the availability and interrelationships between population size, arable land, water, energy, and other biological resources; the loss of wild species of plants and animals; the availability of agricultural land for crops and livestock; and the impact of land degradation on food and other resources. Subsequent chapters discuss water use in agriculture; the mechanization of agriculture and food production; the principles and practices that can make agriculture environmentally and economically sound and sustainable; and the impact of population growth on the environment and food supply.

The ability to trace and authenticate a food product is of major concern to the food industry. This important topic is reviewed extensively in this authoritative text on current and emerging techniques.

Part one deals with analytical techniques applied to food authentication. There are chapters on both established and developing technologies, as well as discussions of chemometrics and data handling. Part two relates these methodologies to particular food and beverage products, such as meat, dairy products, cereals and wine. In part three traceability is reviewed in detail, looking at the development of efficient traceability systems and their application in practice to such areas as animal feed and fish processing.

Food Authenticity and Traceability is an essential reference for all those concerned with food safety and quality.
  • Outlines methods and issues in food authentication and traceability
  • Deals with analytical techniques applied to food authentication, with chapters on established and developing technologies, chemometrics and data handling
  • Explores how techniques are applied in particular sectors and reviews recent developments in traceability systems for differing food products

Improving the integrity of the food chain, making certain that food is traceable, safe to eat, high quality and genuine requires new diagnostic tools, the implementation of novel information systems and input from all food chain participants. Food chain integrity reviews key research in this fast-moving area and how it can be applied to improve the provision of food to the consumer.

Chapters in part one review developments in food traceability, such as food ‘biotracing’, and methods to prevent food bioterrorism. Following this, part two focuses on developments in food safety and quality management. Topics covered include advances in understanding of pathogen behaviour, control of foodborne viruses, hazard ranking and the role of animal feed in food safety. Chapters in part three explore essential aspects of food authenticity, from the traceability of genetically modified organisms in supply chains to new methods to demonstrate food origin. Finally, part four focuses on consumer views on food chain integrity and future trends.

With its distinguished editors and expert team of contributors, Food chain integrity is a key reference for all those tasked with predicting and implementing actions to prevent breaches in the integrity of food production.
