There is a new emerging interest in the effects of gaps and patches on succession and biodiversity. This innovative volume is a synthesis of studies of plant responses to temporal and spatial heterogeneity, the exploitation of resources from pulses and patches by plants, and their competition with neighbors in the face of this variability.
Aboveground, the book focuses upon the nature of canopy patchiness, consequences of this heterogeneity for the light environment, and the mechanisms by which plants respond to and exploit this patchiness. Belowground, the text explores the heterogeneity of soil environments and how root systems obtain nutrients and water in the context of this temporal and spatial variability.
As a new reference in an evolving and growing field, this text is sure to be a valuable tool for researchers and advanced students in plant physiology, ecology, agronomy, and forestry alike.

Exploration, Identification and Utilization of Barley Germplasm explores the timely global challenges related to barley production posed by the narrowing of biodiversity and problem soils, identifying elite genotypes which will enhance barley breeding and be essential to genetic and evolution studies.

The book covers the utilization of barley germplasm for improving the quality of both food and feed barley as well as exploring and utilizing varieties of germplasm that are tolerant to drought, waterlogged, salt, and acid soil. Chapters are devoted to prime strategies for future research, including identifying barley germplasm by applying Omics, exploring barley germplasm by means of the Focused Identification of Germplasm Strategy (FIGS), and creating barley germplasm through mutation.

Users will find this book to be a key research reference for both professionals and academics, providing a comprehensive update for established barley researchers that equips them with an understanding of the new methodologies needed for innovation and discovery, while also providing a helpful entry to the subject for young researchers and students.

  • Provides a one-stop shop to acquire a speedy overview of the main and recently applied issues of barley breeding
  • Provides newly-developed methodologies in barley germplasm research
  • Describes special genotypes from wild barley, including Tibetan wild barley, which show a high tolerance to abiotic stresses and carry different alleles from cultivated barley

Exploring Animal Behavior in Laboratory and Field is designed to provide a variety of exercises that engage students actively in all phases of scientific investigation, from formulating research questions through interpreting and presenting final results. It attempts to share the collective teaching expertise and experience of members of the Animal Behavior Society with all who are willing to benefit from their wisdom. Four types of exercises are presented: (1) traditional exercises in which students follow a pre-determined protocol to test particular hypotheses explicitly stated in the exercise, (2) traditional exercises that can easily be adapted to inquiry-based approaches, (3) combined pedagogy exercises that involve both traditional and inquiry approaches, and (4) inquiry exercises in which students first brainstorm to generate their own hypotheses, then design their own experiements to test their hypotheses.

* Supports a range of pedagogical styles and texts in animal behavior with active learning experiences that engage students
* Students and instructors benefit from knowledge and experience of members of the Animal Behavior Society
* Flexibility of design enables students and instrucotrs to tailor the exercises to their needs
* Can be used to support lab courses that are completely inquiry based as well as independent student research projects in animal behavior
* Consideration of animal care guidelines provides an excellent way to address and discuss concerns about the use of animals in teaching and research
* Emphasizes the hypothetico-deductive approach that students have difficulty understanding and implementing
* Supporting materials make additional required texts unnecessary and link study design considerations with real studies

Explosion Hazards in the Process Industries, Second Edition, delivers the most current and comprehensive content for today’s process engineer. Process safety and petrochemical engineers inherently accept that there is a risk of explosions when working on process facilities such as plants and refineries. Yet many that enter this field do not have a fundamental starting point to understand the nature of explosions, and there are a lot of misconceptions and impartial information in the market.

Explosion Hazards in the Process Industries, Second Edition, answers this need by providing engineers and consultants a go-to reference and training guide to understand the principles of explosions, what causes them, and how to mitigate and prevent them from reoccurring. Enhanced to include new chapters on BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosions), water vapor explosions, and destructive effects from accidental explosions, this guide continues to fulfill a comprehensive introduction to the subject, rounded out with new case studies, references, and a discussion on methods of hazard and risk analysis.

  • Offers a comprehensive introduction to process safety
  • Includes updated new chapters on Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosions (BLEVE), water vapor explosions, and destructive effects for accidental explosions
  • Gains new case studies, references, and standards to stay on top of what is new and critical
  • Establishes the starting point to process safety and understanding the fundamentals of explosions and how to mitigate them
