Interpretation of Metallographic Structures, Second Edition describes the features of metallographic structures using an optical reflection microscope.

This book is divided into six chapters and starts with an examination of the polycrystalline structures, subgrain boundaries, and an overview of cold and hot working, as well as recrystallization and grain growth. The next chapter explores the metallography of fracture, which involves visual inspection, low-power stereoptic light microscopy, polished-section light-reflection microscopy, and the scanning electron microscope. This topic is followed by discussions of the different types of crystallizations, the mechanism of solid-state transformation, and the diffusion and other transport processes. The last chapter involves the measurement aspects in metallography, including measurement of grain and particles sizes, as well as their distribution.

This book is intended primarily to metallurgists and researchers.

Interpretation of Metallographic Structures, Third Edition, is concerned with metallography as a metallurgical tool. It is an organized presentation of specimen microstructures, each chosen for its clarity of illustration and each or in groups forming the pretext for discussions of the interrelation between physical metallurgy and metallography. The focus is on structures characteristic in a physical metallurgy sense, with the purpose of demonstrating that logical framework of interpretation can supplant mental storage of infinite variations. The book contains seven chapters and begins with a discussion of polycrystalline structures. This is followed by separate chapters on the metallography of fracture; crystallization processes including dendritic crystallization, peritectic crystallization, and metastable crystallization; solid state transformations; diffusion and transport processes; procedures for measuring metallographic features; and energy dispersive spectography. This book is directed toward the senior student as a preview of the scope of his subject and to the practicing metallurgist as a reintroduction.

La caries dental es considerada una de las patologías más prevalentes e incidentes en el ser humano, es una enfermedad infecciosa y multifactorial que afecta los tejidos duros del diente. El objetivo del trabajo fue estudiar su relación con el sistema inmunológico y el sistema hormonal suprarrenal en adultos jóvenes dentro de un contexto sociocultural. Se estudia la presencia de caries en una muestra (N=183) de adultos jóvenes (25 a 35 años), en la ciudad de La Rioja desde Octubre 2005 a Diciembre 2007. A partir de la muestra se seleccionaron 40 individuos agrupados según la cantidad de caries en Grupo Problema con más de 7 (N=20) y Grupo Control con no más de una (N=20). Se estudió la Inmunoglobulina A secretoria total (método IDR), la Inmunoglobulina A específica anti-Streptococcus mutans (método Elisa indirecto) en saliva. Se evaluó adrenalina, noradrenalina (método HPLC) y cortisol (método RIA) en orina. Se utilizó el test de Kruskal, ANOVA y coeficiente Pearson para análisis estadístico. El 77% de la población estudiada tuvo caries activas con promedio 3,73 y CPOD igual a 10,39. El CPOD en las mujeres (11,08) fue mayor que en los hombres (9,52) (p=0,0420). El grupo problema masculino tuvo mayor nivel de IgAs total (0,0224), menor de IgAs anti-Sm (p=0,0380) y mayor nivel de adrenalina (p=0,0078) que el grupo control masculino y problema femenino (p=0,0013, p=0,0069, p=0,0333 respectivamente). Las mujeres del grupo problema tuvieron menor nivel de cortisol que las control (p=0,0200) y que los hombres del grupo problema (p=0,0289). Se detectó correlación en el grupo Problema entre IgAs total-adrenalina (r=0,57) y entre IgAs total-cortisol (r=0,56). La presencia de caries dental en los adultos jóvenes se relacionaría con el sistema inmunológico y sistema hormonal suprarrenal, con ciertas diferencias entre géneros. En los hombres podría asociarse con la vía nerviosa simpática y en las mujeres con la vía hipotálamo, hipófisis, corteza suprarrenal. Las dos vías podrían modificar la inmunidad bucal permitiendo la presencia de caries en ambos géneros.
