One of the most innovative sectors in the rapidly growing functional foods market is that comprising so-called 'performance' functional foods which affect mood, mental and physical performance. La temperatura corporal es quizás la variable ecofisiológica más importante que afecta el funcionamiento en ectotermos, incluyendo el desempeño locomotriz, habilidad de caza, tasas de forrajeo, crecimiento y metabolismo. Es importante destacar que la termorregulación cumple un papel fundamental en la performance locomotriz en ambientes variables, siendo la velocidad de carrera útil al momento de evitar depredadores y capturar las presas. Asimismo, la aclimatación térmica en ectotermos puede afectar la performance de carreras. En este sentido, los lagartos son buenos modelos biológicos para probar los efectos de la posible variación del clima a largo plazo en animales. Un aumento en las temperaturas ambientales puede afectar negativamente la actividad fisiológica del organismo. El objetivo del presente estudio es analizar los efectos de la temperatura sobre el performance como indicador del aptitud, conocer la flexibilidad térmica de los principales parámetros termofisiológicos en Liolaemus olongasta perteneciente al clado grosseorum, siendo endémico del Monte árido de San Juan. Se realizaron capturas estacionales durante dos años para evaluar las variaciones de los parámetros térmicos, la performance y realizar los ensayos de aclimatación en frío y calor. Se registró a campo la temperatura corporal (Tc) de cada individuo. Luego se realizaron diferentes pruebas de laboratorio siguiendo protocolos estandarizados. Para conocer la eficiencia térmica, se midió la temperatura preferida (Tpref) en laboratorio, mediante un gradiente térmico y la temperatura operativa (To) de los microambientes de los sitios de estudio, utilizando modelos de PVC previamente calibrados. Las velocidades se determinaron en carreras cortas y largas, utilizando un carril con celdas infrarrojas. Las pruebas de resistencia del aparato locomotor se llevaron a cabo en cinta caminadora motorizada a velocidad constante. Las temperaturas corporales Tc y preferidas Tpref, varían significativamente entre las diferentes estaciones. Además, la temperatura crítica máxima (TCmáx) luego de ser aclimatados varía significativamente (P< 0,05). Los datos analizados en esta tesis indicarían que L. olongasta es un buen termorregulador, capaz de explotar la disponibilidad térmica del ambiente y mantener así una Tc de campo que se aproxime a Tpref. El 80% de sus velocidades máximas se alcanzaron a diferentes rangos de Tc, variando según las fechas de muestreo. A medida que aumenta Tc se incrementa la resistencia del aparato locomotor. Los parámetros térmicos aumentaron provocando un desplazamiento en la curva de la performance relativa. Cabe destacar que la máxima velocidad de carrera luego del periodo de aclimatación solo mejoró para algunos ensayos de temperatura para CL pero L. olongasta mostro ser un buen corredor de CC luego de ser aclimatado al calor, logrando mejorar su performance locomotriz, cumpliéndose parcialmente la hipótesis de aclimatación beneficiosa.
