Regional land-atmosphere feedbacks play an important role in the occurrence of extremes in southern South America. However, they are not fully understood. Currently, many atmospheric models have simplified land surface schemes that employ fixed land-cover maps. Then the model does not account for vegetation changes. In this work, we propose the use of Ecosystem Functional Types (EFTs) as a replacement of the conventional land cover types. EFTs are patches of the land surface that exchange mass and energy with the atmosphere in a common way. Since EFTs can be defined from Normalized Difference Vegetation Index on an annual basis, the interannual variability of the surface conditions can thus be identified. Several experiments were done with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model. First, the model was carried out for a 11-years period to assess the model proficiency in represent the regional climate with the current parameterizations. Then, WRF simulations with conventional Land Cover Types were compared against simulations with the proposed Ecosystem Functional Types used as lower boundary conditions during the severe Argentine drought of 2008. The overall results show that the use of realistic information of vegetation states enhances the model performance, mainly in precipitation. With the aim to translate the acquired knowledge to practical information, a forecasts and monitoring system is developed. The forecasts skill was evaluated with several scores showing its high prediction ability. Beyond the scores, the users value positively the utility of the system in their own activities.
