One of the greatest concerns in the environmental field is the risk associated with the occurrence of pollutants emitted by human activities. Early identification and investigation of the potential contamination is essential for the protection of the health, one group of emerging contaminants that has taken relevance are the pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products (PPCPs). One source of important PPCPs pollution are wastewater treatment plants where they can suffer degradation and sorption processes by the biomass present in biological treatments. However, the difficulty of identifying and quantifying makes the process simulation a relevant tool for the behavior analysis of these compounds. The other problem that arises to analyze two or more alternative treatment is to determine which one offers the best results, not only in performance terms but also environmental, in this way introduction of an environmental metric is useful to select the best alternative. In the present work were carried out simulations of municipal wastewater treatment plants with software GPS-X, including the PPCPs and its behavior evaluation. Finally, a life cycle impact analysis of the each alternative was carried out to determine the most suitable option, the freeware OpenLCA was crucial to achieving that investigation.Palabras clave – provistas por el repositorio digital
