Globally, every urban center generates at least, two waste types can be considered renewable bio-energy sources: organic fraction of municipal solid waste and wastewater. Inexistent, poorly and low cost management describes the situation in developing countries. Furthermore, it is expected that in Argentina waste management will be locally regulated near future. In this context, the aim of the present thesis is to analyze energy balance and environmental impact of different sustainable alternatives of sewage sludge management in wastewater treatment plants. Modelling and simulation of those biological processes, were implemented. Conventional anaerobic digestion, was studied as main technology for waste stabilization and resource recovery. Most popular alternatives to anaerobic digestion, as thermophilic anaerobic digestion, thermal hydrolysis pre-treatment and anaerobic co-digestion techniques were also considered. The last one, was studied in order to encourage self-supply wastewater treatment plants, with low environmental adverse impact. The process simulation performed was a 500000 and 35000 inhabitants that results in sewage sludge production. Among several cases simulated, for 500000 inhabitants, three alternatives were selected to built 3 scenarios and to perform their environmental and energetic assessment. Environmental assessment was carried out through life cycling assessment. Among four scenarios evaluated only co-digestion with high solid content, is a feasible alternative for energetic self-sufficiency of the whole wastewater treatment plant. However, most environmental and energetic problems were associated to fossil fuels consumption in transport. Positive environmental impacts, were related to waste treatment, and the benefits of the use of their renewable by-products.
