In this thesis, Ru catalysts supported on different substrates to be applied in membrane reactors for hydrogen production were studied. The carbon dioxide reforming (endothermic) and partial oxidation (exothermic) were coupled with the aim of reducing energy consumption and increasing the production of hydrogen. This process, which could be autothermal, gives fundamental added value to the reactions under study. In order to increase and optimize surface area and metal dispersion, different substrates were investigated: La2O3-SiO2 binary systems, lanthanum oxycarbonates (La2O2CO3) and titanosilicates ETS-10. The ruthenium catalysts were studied by the different characterization techniques, such as XPS pseudo in situ, ISS, CO chemisorption, TPR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, LRS in situ, SEM and TEM, among others. With this evidence, representative models were proposed and it was possible to increase knowledge on the transformations produced during the reaction and their influence on the activity and stability of the catalysts. In a first stage, the catalysts were evaluated in a conventional fixed-bed reactor operating under differential conditions. Finally, the best formulations were tested in a Pd-Ag selective-to-hydrogen membrane reactor. All catalysts were active and stable. Using a membrane reactor, a better utilization of the carbon sources was achieved. This research work demonstrates the potentialities of these catalysts to produce pure, CO-free hydrogen to be used directly in a fuel cell, requiring no additional purification steps.
