The main subject of this thesis is the study of the effect of the support (alumina, silica, zirconia, or titania) on the selective hydrogenation of styrene into ethylbenzene using supported Pd and Ni catalysts. The catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation and ionic exchange. By Na addition to the alumina support different Pd concentration profiles along the particle radius were obtained. This was due to changes in the precursor-support solubility. Since there exists a great body of literature explaining the differences in the catalytic behavior for a given metal/support system, the performance of the catalysts was explained in terms of the degree of metal-support interaction. Silica is one of the supports that has the lowest metal-support interaction with Pd. Meanwhile Pd/silica catalysts have the highest activity in hydrogenation of styrene into ethylbenzene. Ionic exchance of Pd(NH3)4 on silica enabled a wide and controlled distribution of particle sizes. Styrene hydrogenation is insensitive to the structure for dispersion in the 15-85% range. When the precursor salt has chlorine the small Pd clusters display a marked decrease of the turnover frequency due to the inhibiting effect of chlorine on small Pd particles. In the case of supported Ni catalysts the turnover frequency was found to remain constant for metal contents between 3-10% and the reaction was structure-insensitive. In comparison to Pd, Ni has an activity an order of magnitude lower.
