General Section
Wilhelm Foissner; Kuidong Xu
As explained in the preface, the monograph has been split into two volumes. This applies also to the genral section. In volume I, the general morphology, the life cycle, and the principal investigation methods are described, while volume II will deal mainly with ecology and geographic distribution, phylogeny, evolution, and classification. Further, it will contain a user-friendly key to all species.

Systematic Section
Wilhelm Foissner; Kuidong Xu
Guidelines for ciliate descriptions are not available. Thus, the chaos prevails. Some put the diagnosis ahead, others banish it to the end of the paper; some describe the "silver features" first, others put them behind the in vivo observations; some use prosa style, others preper telegramese style, and so on. In our opinion, this bewildering situation, partially caused by inexperienced or very individual journal editors, can be ordered by looking beyound the narrow protozoological borders and adopting the style used by experienced taxonomists from other fields (MAYR 1975). Then, for instance, it becomes clear that telegramese style should be used and species description should commence with a concise "diagnosis" separatin it from the nearest relaives = containing only or mainly those features needed to make a key.

Family Protospathidiidae nov. gam.
Wilhelm Foissner; Kuidong Xu
Diagnosis: Cylindroidal to very narrowly spatulate or obclavate Spathidiina with temporary cytostome. Circumoral Kinetofragments separated from each other by mimute gaps and attached to the somatic ciliary rows. Anterior end right side ciliary rows directed dorsally, left side row ends directed ventrally. Oral bulge obovate or cuneate, small, that is, usually as long as or shorter than widest trunk region. Brush located dorsolaterrally and very diverse.
Pp. 57-154
Family Arcuospathidiidae nov. fam.
Wilhelm Foissner; Kuidong Xu
Diagnosis: Spathidiina with temporary cytostome and somatic ciliary rows anteriorly curved dorsally on both sides of cell and distinctly separate from circumoral kinety. Brush located dorsally, dorsolaterally, or on left side. Extrusomes restricted to oral bulge or in both oral bulge and somatic cortex. Oral bulge usually as long as or longer than widest trunk region, cuneate to very elongate elliptical; ventral end of circummoral Kinety closed.
Pp. 155-329
Family Apertospathulidea FOISSNER, XU & KREUTZ, 2005
Wilhelm Foissner; Kuidong Xu
Diagnosis: Spathidiina with lasso-shaped oral bulge and circumoral kinety open ventrally.
Pp. 330-384
