Poncirus trifoliata is the most important rootstock in Argentina’s citrus production. Its seeds present a physical dormancy. The objectives of this research were to select the most appropriate chemical scarification method and to adjust tests for the determination of the physiological quality of Poncirus trifoliata seeds to improve the productivity of the nurseries of citrus plants under cover. A first experiment was conducted to assess the efficiency of three chemical scarification methods and the effect of these methods on seed vigor. A second experiment was conducted to assess seed vigor and the role of seed coats in imbibition. The best chemical scarification method was compared with manual peeled seeds, and no removal of seed coats. At the end of the germination tests, the seedlings were classified into two categories: normal and abnormal. Also, a preliminary experiment was carried out to evaluate the concentration and incubation time of the tetrazolium viability test (TZ) proposed by the associations of seed analysts, and the treatments to adjust the TZ test were defined based on the results obtained. The seeds were considered viable or non viable according to the stains, elaborating topographic viability patterns. Scarification with sodium hypochlorite showed the best results. Patterns of seedlings were described for the categories of normal (vigorous and weak) and abnormal seedlings.
