The commercial quality of cultivars of Gerbera jamesonii L. Super Nova, Dune and Ruby Red was evaluated. Histochemical, metabolic and structural characteristics and their relationship to vase life quality were studied. Also, as Ruby Red was the only one presenting curvature, the effect of a calcium cloride 0,5% vase solution on bending of Gerbera jamesonii L. Ruby Red was studied. Plants were grown under greenhouse and soil less culture, at INTA San Pedro, Province of Buenos Aires. Floral rods were handpicked and classified following Veiling Holambra standards. Subsequently postharvest behavior was studied. Results were analyzed through ANOVA and means separated through Tuckey test 0.05%. Results of the experiments showed that quality obtained corresponds to international commercial standards, and differential post-harvest behavior responds to inner cultivar characteristics. The postharvest behavior was significantly different between the cultivars, doubling the duration of the Super Nova and Dune, compared to the Ruby Red, which was the only one that showed curvature of the peduncle and a higher rate of elongation, water consumption, weight loss fresh and of sugars and an increase of CE and pH in the water of the vase. The morphological characteristics showed a significant disintegration of the cellular structures. The use of a 0.5% calcium chloride solution made it possible to avoid curving the Ruby Red cultivar, extending its vase life and making it similar to that of the cultivars Dune and Super Nova.Palabras clave – provistas por el repositorio digital
