The results show that chronic administration of a sucrose rich diet (SRD) induced in liver: increased protein mass of the nuclear receptor LXR alpha and decreased mass of PPAR alpha. This related to the activation of lipogenic enzymes and decreased activity of fatty acid oxidation enzymes, indicating a preferential destiny of them towards reesterification pathway and hepatic triglyceride synthesis. Furthermore, the dyslipidemic animals exhibited impaired insulin action in liver tissue associated with lower IRS 1 and alpha subunit p85 mass protein. This would explain the moderate hyperglycemia present in these animals. The cod liver oil (CLO) produced: increased activity of fatty acid oxidation enzymes and lipogenic enzyme normalization with increased PPAR alpha protein mass and decreased LXR alpha mass. This indicates: lower “de novo” fatty acids synthesis and increased oxidative pathways with reduced availability of plasma fatty acids to the liver, contribute to the reversal of hepatic steatosis and dyslipidemia. Furthermore, reduced expression of IRS 1 and alpha subunit p85 protein mass observed in animals with SRD failed to revert completely with CLO. The reversal of the global peripheral insulin resistance and improving insulin sensitivity in the liver, with normalization of insulin secretion in vitro in perifused isolated islets, would lead to restoration of glycemia within normal levels with CLO.Palabras clave – provistas por el repositorio digital
