Zeolite membranes are very well positioned for use in industrial membrane reactors due to their thermal and chemical stability. They are particularly useful to improve conversion, selectivity and yield in equilibrium-limited reactions by selective product removal. The combination of separation and reaction processes in a single unit is expected to provide a greater flexibility of operation as well as further enhancement in the system performance. As is known from the literature, the use of MFI-zeolite membranes appears as a potentially more energy-efficient xylene separation method compared to the conventional separation technologies. In this thesis, different MFI composite membranes were synthesized on top of porous stainless steel tubes. In order to characterize the membranes several techniques were used: X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), FT-IR spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), nitrogen and xylene permeation measurements such temperature and pressure function. All the membranes synthesized were selective to p-xylene. The membranes that showed better results were incorporated to a xylene isomerization reactor in order to improve the p-xylene production.
