This work aims to experimentally study the temporal evolution of the interaction between turbulent flow and scour processes around a bridge abutment, which has a flexible bed protection. A series of laboratory experiments was performed in a rectangular channel where a prismatic abutment is located, protecting the nearby channel bed with a blanket consisting of blocks attached to geotextile. Two experimental methodologies were used: a) continuous characterization of the evolution of the bed and turbulent flow in defined locations around the bridge abutment and, b) detailed measurement of 3D flow field for four different channel bed configurations, corresponding to different times of the evolution of the scour process. In addition, the interaction between turbulent flow and scour processes around an unprotected bridge abutment is studied in order to contrast the results for the same hydraulic conditions. Flow velocity measurements were performed using two velocimetry techniques: Large-scale particle tracking velocimetry (LSPTV) an acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV). The experimental work presented here made it possible to have a detailed data set of flow velocities and scour depths, available for validation of numerical models. The temporal evolution of two-dimensional and three-dimensional flow fields have been analyzed according the erosion develops. Mean flow patterns associated with the morphology of the resulting channel bed were identified. In addition, it was verified the interaction between the behavior of turbulence parameters (energy associated with flow velocity fluctuations and Reynolds stresses) and the development of scour around a protected bridge abutment.
