Formerly, most long-term basic research was carried out at universities, and most short-term product development was done at commercial sites. Now, Industry is trying to take command of certain areas of basic research at universities in order to redirect their efforts toward Industry’s short-term agenda. Here, Charles Kurland discusses aspects of this policy shift.</jats:p>
