As the governments and peoples of the world come to face the global impact of the technological revolution, it is appropriate to consider the future of world energy supplies. This conference approached the task not only of developing the means of tapping renewable energy sources, but also of showing renewable energy to be a viable alternative to current, harmful sources of energy. Economic and educational problems were addressed along with the scientific ones. The development of alternative energy is of no use if it cannot be made economically viable or if people are not convinced of its advantages.

Energy and Urban Built Form contains the papers that were presented at the International Seminar on Urban Built Form and Energy Analysis, held at Darwin College in Cambridge on June 26 and 27, 1986. The seminar focused on energy use in the built environment at an intermediate scale, between individual buildings and cities, where urban and architectural factors interact. It also covers the simulation and analysis of the performance of groups of buildings, from city blocks and industrial developments to mixed-use urban developments, housing estates, and stocks of buildings such as schools and houses.
Organized into four parts encompassing 13 chapters, this volume describes techniques for calculating and minimizing energy consumption in groups of buildings, cities or entire regions. It first provides an overview of mathematical models, as well as approaches to the computation of the energy demand or energy-related properties of housing designs or groups of buildings. It then explores the politics of energy and the built environment, the mechanisms by which technical developments may be translated into effective action, and the energy efficiency of the urban built form. The reader is also introduced to passive solar scenarios for the UK domestic sector, intermediate-scale energy initiatives in the United Kingdom, thermal efficiency of building clusters, and glazed courtyards as an element of the low-energy city.
This book is a valuable resource for city planners and engineers, scientists, and anyone interested in energy conservation.

The NORTHSUN 90 conference provided a forum for scientists from high latitude countries to discuss their experience of solar energy. The book is divided into two parts, Part One deals with energy conservation and management in buildings and solar and low energy architecture. Part Two covers all aspects of renewable energy; materials science and photovoltaic conversion, weather data, heating and cooling of buildings, hot water systems, wave energy, geothermal energy, energy storage, country programmes and other related topics. In northern latitudes energy savings in buildings of up to 50% can be achieved. NORTHSUN 90 encouraged the attainment of this goal, promoting the use of solar energy in heating and collective work on solar projects of direct benefit to the region.

Energy Conservation Through Control provides information pertinent to energy-conserving control systems, which is relevant to efficient plant operations. This book discusses the processes involving energy conversion and examines the laws of thermodynamics.
Organized into four parts encompassing nine chapters, this book starts with an overview of the first law of thermodynamics, which emphasizes that energy is naturally conserved in any isolated system. This text then explores the various aspects of combustion, which includes air pollution control, controlling airflow, and controlling fuel flow. Other chapters describe the common refrigeration systems and examine the factors affecting their performance. This book discusses as well the importance of refrigeration systems in industrial processing and to air-condition buildings. The final chapter deals with the general features and control problems in energy conservation in heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system.
Plant designers, control engineers, power plant operators, and industrial managers will find this book extremely useful.

Progress in Astronautics and Rocketry, Volume 3: Energy Conversion for Space Power focuses on the use of dependable electric power sources on space vehicles.
Composed of various literature, the book first discusses the physics of thermoelectricity, thermoelectric generator of materials, the use of semiconductors in thermoelectric conversion, and the use of high temperature thermoelectric materials for power generation. The text also presents experiments on the effect of irradiation on thermoelectric materials, thermoelectric elements in space power systems, and thermionics. The book then describes photovoltaic effect and conversion of solar energy; trends in silicon solar cell technology; the use of silicon solar cells in energy conversion; and how radiation affects solar cell power systems. The text notes the specifications of batteries if used in communications satellites; the use of positive-displacement engines and turbines on cryogenic power systems; and the characteristics of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) generators in space power conversion.
The book is a good source of information for readers and scientists wanting to explore the potential of energy conversion in space power technology.
