There are no shortcuts in organic chemistry. Understanding and mastery cannot be achieved without devoting adequate time and attention to the theories and concepts of the discipline. It is with this premise that Ouellette and Rawn set out to comprehensively survey the field in Organic Chemistry, with an emphasis on connecting the basic principles of organic chemistry to real world challenges that require analysis, not just recall.

Organic chemistry is at the interface of physical and biological science, and this new text lays out the basic principles of organic chemistry in their relation to a host of other fields in both physical and biological sciences. Chemical bonding determines molecular structure, which in turn dictates physical, chemical, and biological properties from the smallest molecules to the largest. Molecular structure determines reaction mechanisms, from the smallest to the largest molecules. Reaction mechanisms determine strategies for organic synthesis, and these synthetic principles extend to every aspect of synthesis, from drug design to the methods cells employ to synthesize the molecules of which they are made. These relationships form a continuous narrative throughout the book, wherein principles logically evolve from one to the next, from the simplest to the most complex examples, with abundant connections between the text and real world applications.

  • Contains extensive examples of biological relevance
  • Includes an important chapter on organometallic chemistry not found in other standard references
  • Extended, illustrated glossary
  • Appendices on thermodynamics, kinetics, and transition state theory

Organic Chemistry Concepts: An EFL Approach provides an introductory overview of the subject, to enable the reader to understand many critical, experimental facts. Designed to cover a single-semester course or a needed review on the principles of Organic Chemistry, the book is written and organized for readers whose first language is not English. Approximately 80% of the words used are drawn from the list of the 2,000 most common English words; the remaining 20% includes necessary technical words, common chemistry terms, and well-known academic words (per the Academic Word List). The book has been class-tested internationally as well as with native English speakers, and differs from other introductory textbooks in the subject both in its coverage and organization, with a particular focus on common problem areas. Focused on a limited number of functional classes, Organic Chemistry Concepts: An EFL Approach introduces those organic compounds early in the book. Once readers have a foundation of the concepts and language of organic chemistry, they can build from that knowledge and work with relatively complex molecules, such as some natural product types covered in a later chapter. The book describes basic level reaction mechanisms when instructive, and illustrations throughout to emphasize the 3D nature of organic chemistry. The book includes multiple pedagogical features, such as chapter questions and useful appendices, to support reader comprehension.

  • Covers all primary concepts in accessible language and pedagogical features, worked examples, glossary, chapter questions, illustrations, and useful summaries
  • Builds a foundation of key material through a structured framework from which readers can expand their understanding
  • Contains class-tested content written in a straightforward and accessible manner for non-native English speakers

Organic Chemistry Concepts and Applications for Medicinal Chemistry provides a valuable refresher for understanding the relationship between chemical bonding and those molecular properties that help to determine medicinal activity. This book explores the basic aspects of structural organic chemistry without going into the various classes of reactions. Two medicinal chemistry concepts are also introduced: partition coefficients and the nomenclature of cyclic and polycyclic ring systems that comprise a large number of drug molecules. Given the systematic name of a drug, the reader is guided through the process of drawing an accurate chemical structure. By emphasizing the relationship between structure and properties, this book gives readers the connections to more fully comprehend, retain, apply, and build upon their organic chemistry background in further chemistry study, practice, and exams.

  • Focused approach to review those organic chemistry concepts that are most important for medicinal chemistry practice and understanding
  • Accessible content to refresh the reader's knowledge of bonding, structure, functional groups, stereochemistry, and more
  • Appropriate level of coverage for students in organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, and related areas; individuals seeking content review for graduate and medical courses and exams; pharmaceutical patent attorneys; and chemists and scientists requiring a review of pertinent material

Organic Chemistry Study Guide: Key Concepts, Problems, and Solutions features hundreds of problems from the companion book, Organic Chemistry, and includes solutions for every problem. Key concept summaries reinforce critical material from the primary book and enhance mastery of this complex subject.

Organic chemistry is a constantly evolving field that has great relevance for all scientists, not just chemists. For chemical engineers, understanding the properties of organic molecules and how reactions occur is critically important to understanding the processes in an industrial plant. For biologists and health professionals, it is essential because nearly all of biochemistry springs from organic chemistry. Additionally, all scientists can benefit from improved critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are developed from the study of organic chemistry.

Organic chemistry, like any "skill", is best learned by doing. It is difficult to learn by rote memorization, and true understanding comes only from concentrated reading, and working as many problems as possible. In fact, problem sets are the best way to ensure that concepts are not only well understood, but can also be applied to real-world problems in the work place.

  • Helps readers learn to categorize, analyze, and solve organic chemistry problems at all levels of difficulty
  • Hundreds of fully-worked practice problems, all with solutions
  • Key concept summaries for every chapter reinforces core content from the companion book

Cobertura temática: Ciencias químicas - Otras ciencias sociales

Organic Nanoreactors: From Molecular to Supramolecular Organic Compounds provides a unique overview of synthetic, porous organic compounds containing a cavity which can encapsulate one or more guest(s). Confined space within a nanoreactor can isolate the guest(s) from the bulk and effectively influence the reaction inside the nanoreactor. Naturally occurring enzymes are compelling catalysts for selective reactions as their three-dimensional structures build up clefts, caves, or niches in which the active site is located. Additionally, reactive sites carrying special functional groups allow only specific reagents to react in a particular way, to lead to specific enantiomers as products. Equipped with suitable functional groups, then, nanoreactors form a new class of biomimetic compounds, which have multiple important applications in the synthesis of nanomaterials, catalysis, enzyme immobilization, enzyme therapy, and more. This book addresses various synthetic, organic nanoreactors, updating the previous decade of research and examining recent advances in the topic for the first comprehensive overview of this exciting group of compounds, and their practical applications. Bringing in the Editor’s experience in both academic research and industrial applications, Organic Nanoreactors focuses on the properties and applications of well-known as well as little-examined nanoreactor compounds and materials and includes brief overviews of synthetic routes and characterization methods.

  • Focuses on organic nanoreactor compounds for greater depth
  • Covers the molecular, supramolecular, and macromolecular perspectives
  • Compiles previous and current sources from this growing field in one unique reference
  • Provides brief overviews of synthetic routes and characterization methods
