<jats:p>As the eminently quotable Yankees ballplayer, Yogi Berra, famously said, "You can observe a lot just by watching." What's true of baseball is true also of biology, and today, biologists are watching quite a bit--just check the pages of your favorite journal. Armed with increasingly sophisticated instruments and software, researchers are probing the inner lives of cells more comprehensively than ever. Many of their advances have been commercialized by the likes of Nikon, Leica, Olympus, and Zeiss; others remain confined to the labs that devised them. For the optically creative researcher, it's an exciting time to be a microscopist.</jats:p>
