<jats:p> <jats:bold>PARIS</jats:bold> —France's conservative government has defined seven priority areas of science, mostly in applied research, and has decreed that the country's sprawling public research organizations devote increasing amounts of funding to these themes. Most researchers, however, see this as a threat to basic science and are reluctant to play ball. </jats:p>
