What's Old Is New: 1918 Virus Matches 2009 H1N1 Strain

<jats:p> New findings, reported online this week in <jats:ext-link xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/science.1186430"> <jats:italic>Science</jats:italic> </jats:ext-link> and <jats:ext-link xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" ext-link-type="uri" xlink:href="http://stm.sciencemag.org/content/2/24/24ra21.abstract"> <jats:italic>Science Translational Medicine</jats:italic> </jats:ext-link> indicate that the surface protein, hemagglutinin, of the "novel" H1N1 swine influenza virus that last year caused the first human pandemic in 4 decades closely matches the HA in the H1N1 virus responsible for the 1918 pandemic. </jats:p>
