Biology Departments Restructure
Wade Roush
A wave of reorganization is striking U.S. biology departments, and many are splitting according to level of study—molecules versus ecosystems. But there's also a growing backlash against this trend, as some researchers argue that the hottest topics in biology encompass several levels.

Andrew Lawler
U.S. and Russian officials are bickering over whether the first pieces of the international space station will be launched this year or next. But whatever they decide, don't expect much science to be done on the $30 billion orbiting laboratory until after the turn of the century.

Phylogenetic Analysis: Getting Its Day in Court
Gretchen Vogel

The evidence was ruled admissible in a preliminary hearing, although the defense is now challenging that ruling.

Court Invalidates Expert Panel Report
Jocelyn Kaiser
Three U.S. activist groups last week won a court victory when a judge agreed that because a National Academy of Sciences panel formed to study the National Ignition Facility—a $1.1 billion laser-fusion project—had operated behind closed doors, the Department of Energy, which commissioned the report, could not use its findings. This decision suggest that the much-cherished confidentiality of academy panels may be a thing of the past.
