At What Price?

Andrew Lawler

Federal belt-tightening has driven a wedge between those who favor a more aggressive approach to lobbying—rating lawmakers, rallying the troops at the first sign of danger, and raising a war chest to promote science among the corridors of power—and those who worry that such politicking will jeopardize a half-century of bipartisan support. At stake is the size of future research budgets.

Judgment Pries Open Expert Panel

Jocelyn Kaiser

While much of the government operates in a glare of publicity, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), which forms expert panels that advise the government on scientific matters, has always worked behind closed doors. African Malaria Studies Draw Attention

Eliot Marshall

About 100 scientists and public health experts from around the world gathered in Dakar, Senegal, last week to kick off what could become a new, coordinated program to attack the disease in Africa. Much of the impetus for the initiative came from Harold Varmus, director of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and Maxime Schwartz, director of France's Institut Pasteur, who both attended the meeting. Varmus said the focus of the new initiative would be on building up research capabilities in Africa. A smaller session is expected to be held later this year to nail down funding commitments.
